Dyer’s C-Clamps

These versatile steel C-clamps are my #1 pick tool for the itajime process!

If you want crisp edged patterns and lines, you NEED pressure. String, rubber bands, A-clamps and the like just don’t cut it.

Ideal for compressing wooden shaped blocks against folded layers of fabric.

I use these exact clamps for 97% (estimated ;) ) of my clamped, resist shape dyeing. The other 3% is a set of deep-throated clamps for smooshing down large wood shapes placed far from the edges of fabric - which are much more bulky and awkward to work with.

All the photos included are designs created using this set of 3” clamps.

This size and shape clamp provides the right amount of both strength and pressure. Smaller clamps can break under the strain of compressing wood and fabric. Also, smaller clamps are more challenging to actually apply ENOUGH pressure. Clamps larger than these can be challenging to fit into the vat - depending on the size of your container.

A note - if you’re pairing this clamp set with a plexiglass shape being squeezed against fabric - be cautious about how much pressure you crank down onto your shapes, as plexiglass is more brittle than wood, it can crack and break.

If you haven’t used them in a few months, rinse them off and brush away any rust that may have formed in the channels of the screw prior to use - otherwise the iron may deposit onto your fabric as you dye. This is a rare occurrence but has been known to happen.
